“Pride of the Prairie Tote” starts on a slotted wood base.  Two sizes and colors of spokes are used.  Techniques include twining, triple twining and SHAPING!  Leather handles and the unique embellishment made by Mikayla make this basket extra special.

This basket was designed for the Land of Lincoln Basketweaver’s 2021 Starved Rock Weaving Day Event held at Starved Rock State Park in Illinois.  The event is Monday, June 7th, 2021.

As always, it is an honor to be asked to create a special basket for an event.  This year I asked a local artist Mikayla Murray to make the embellishment for the “Pride of the Prairie” tote.  Each embellishment is signed by her.  Please check out Mikayla’s website for her unique art!

My hometown is Decatur, Illinois.  Decatur and the land around Decatur are known as “Pride of the Prairie” – that is where the name of the tote came from.  The blue and orange are Illini colors and of course match the embellishment.  I hope you enjoy weaving this as much as I enjoyed creating it!
